Throughout September, approximately 3,000 organizations will participate in activities in support of National Preparedness Month. CDC supports this initiative by partnering with national, regional, state, and local government agencies, as well as private and public organizations, to encourage persons to take part in preparedness efforts at home, school, and throughout their communities.

Applications are being accepted for CDC's July 2015–June 2017 Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program. EIS is a 2-year, postgraduate program of service and on-the-job training for health professionals interested in the practice of epidemiology. Each year, EIS selects approximately 80 persons from applicants around the world and provides them with opportunities to gain hands-on experience in epidemiology at CDC or at state or local health departments.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States (1). National Stroke Awareness Month aims to save lives by increasing awareness and educating the public about cardiovascular health.

In 2012, approximately 21,000 passenger vehicle occupants died in motor vehicle crashes in the United States; 52% were unrestrained at the time of the crash (1). An additional estimated 2.6 million nonfatal injuries from motor vehicle crashes were treated in emergency departments (2).
